Designing Trust Into Your Checkout Experience

Your customer has browsed, compared, added to cart, and clicked checkout. They are ready to buy. And then 70% of them leave. The biggest reason? Trust issues at the most critical moment of the purchase journey.

Progress Indicators

Show customers exactly where they are in the checkout process. A clear progress bar (Shipping → Payment → Confirmation) reduces anxiety and sets expectations. Nobody wants to feel trapped in an endless form.

Security Signals

Display SSL padlock icons, payment processor logos (Visa, Mastercard, Stripe), and trust badges prominently. Place them near the payment form, not in the footer. A "Secure Checkout" heading above the card fields works wonders.

Transparent Pricing

Surprise costs are the number one reason for cart abandonment. Show shipping costs, taxes, and any fees before the customer reaches the payment step. Better yet, show an order summary that updates in real time as they proceed.

Guest Checkout

Forcing account creation at checkout loses you 24% of potential sales. Always offer guest checkout. You can invite them to create an account after purchase, when they are already committed.

Payment Options

Offer multiple payment methods. Credit cards are essential, but adding PayPal, Apple Pay, and Google Pay can increase conversion by 10-15%. The fewer steps between intent and payment, the better.

Error Handling

When a form field has an error, highlight it clearly with a red border and a specific message. "Invalid card number" is helpful. "Error" is not. Never clear the entire form on an error — preserve everything the customer already typed.

Mobile Optimisation

Over 60% of e-commerce traffic is mobile. Your checkout must work flawlessly on small screens. Use large touch targets, numeric keypads for card fields, and auto-advancing between input groups.
